Kat was born February 14th 1964 in Blackpoint. His dad is a scientist and his mom is a nurse. He is one of the few main characters that still has living parents ( to his detriment ) There is a parasite fused inside his body that demands the consumption of human body parts. In return, he gets regenerative abilities and inhuman strength, at the cost of his sanity. Because of this requirement for constant “fresh meat,” Kat works alongside local law enforcement and kills criminals who slip under the radar. Despite this deal, he still goes rogue and attacks people who aren’t approved.

The parasite exacerbates pre-existing mental health conditions and is constantly trying to sway the host into impulsive and dangerous decisions, harvesting not only the flesh they consume, but also the intense emotional energy experienced alongside it. Kat is stuck in the middle as they slowly lose control and try to keep these unapproved killings a secret, while his boss and the police chief are both trying to wrangle him into subservience even if the cost is his consciousness.

In the midst of chaos, Kat desperately craves normalcy. So when he stumbles into a distressed stranger who knows nothing about him, he immediately becomes obsessed with the idea of rescuing them and pretending to be normal.

Biography

personality

Externally Kat adapts a macho, hyper-masculine persona. When he interacts with strangers, he is blunt and expressionless, never opening up more than is needed. Forgoing conversation entirely whenever possible. Kat doesn’t do small talk. However, with people they are close to, they ramble extensively about their interests and are naturally very smiley and upbeat. But this can change rapidly as they also have a quick temper and violent streak, demonstrated by the fact that he kills a teen for heckling him in the first episode. However, he is way more willing to put up with abuse from people he knows versus any kind of pushback from strangers, who he does not give the benefit of the doubt to. Escalating a potential mistake into a full blown brawl.

Minimalism

Not only is Kat immensely stressed out by clutter, but he’s also afraid of getting too attached to things that he will ultimately have to get rid of or leave behind. He has no decor or artwork, only the furniture that came with the apartment. Despite his main living space being very plain, he has repainted his kitchen a number of times in the middle of the night during hypomanic episodes. His kitchen is currently a mix of bright teal and purple. He isn’t necessarily a germaphobe, but is distressed by the idea of contamination. For the most part his medication keeps this compulsion under control, but he will occasionally give in when under stress. Other people being in his space exacerbates this issue because he can’t control what they touch or do when he isn’t watching them.

Meds/ mental health

The types and availability of psychiatric medications was very different in the 80s versus today, and as a result Kat’s prescribed drug cocktail is a mess. Side effects are way more intense and leave him feeling emotionally stunted. But his regenerative abilities also affect how they metabolize and make it incredibly difficult to find a combination that works even semi sustainably. Kat trials through a number of meds before settling on his current dosage, but his current version of stability still involves episodes sneaking through. With his life circumstances true stability is impossible. Even with the chemical imbalance semi-under control, the constant onslaught of recurring traumatic events will occasionally still trigger mania and psychosis. While medicated these episodes usually don’t go past hypo or last more than a few days. But when unmedicated, they can last for months and usually spiral into mixed episodes. While Kat typically experiences little to no sexual attraction, mania flips that switch and makes them temporarily hypersexual and borderline insatiable. This does not follow through when the episode ends leading him to spiral into intense depression and immediate regret. Despite being on multiple sedatives, Kat still struggles with insomnia, and has a separate sleeping pill that he takes in addition to his other meds. He still experiences drowsiness and brain fog as side effects, but they don’t help him sleep, and just make it more difficult to complete tasks that require focus.

Interests

Kat’s special interest is dogs, which bleeds into every facet of his life from how he interacts with people and the decisions he makes. Because his apartment doesn’t allow dogs, he has been seen frequently trying to sneak them in, only for them to be caught and killed by boss. At this point in the story, we don’t know why he does this. Kat has snuck in a variety of little dogs such as terriers and chihuahuas (due to their compact size, he simply sneaks them in through his backpack) but he also really likes big dogs and sneaks them in when he is able to as well. His last dog was a black lab mix named Roxanne. When Kat rescues Mortem, they treat him more like a pet than a person. This causes some contention between them and the group, but Mortem seems to like it.

Gender Identity

Kat lives in a near constant state of dissociation to the point where catching his reflection is alarming. He does not feel connected to his body at all and does not like being reminded of what he looks like. Mirrors are a massive trigger for them for multiple reasons. Appearance wise they skew masculine but only because they feel obligated to perform as a man. While he would like to wear more feminine clothing, he feels an intense shame and disgust when seeing himself wearing it. That being said, they have no desire to be a woman and would prefer to be perceived as an amorphous blob. His ideal body would be a Ken doll. It is implied that Kat attempts to castrate himself but it grows back due to his regenerative ability.

Relationships

Kat has been dating Landon on and off since they were 16. Prior to the SAB intro, they were broken up for a couple months, which is implied to be at least some of the cause of his erratic behavior. When Kat meets Mortem there is some obvious jealousy on Landon‘s part that spirals into concern for Kat’s well-being, and hatred towards Mortem, even hoping that Kat eventually kills him. They are still close despite being broken up. But Landon seems distant and frustrated by Kat, who is confused and clingy.

His other friends (Nasri and Ayden) have a close but tense relationship as well. Not wanting to bother them, Kat mostly keeps his feelings to himself, and doesn’t discuss his hobbies with them, even after knowing them for years. However, he does complain to Nasri about any drama that comes up with Landon. And she lets him vent because she knows her brother is an ass.

There are a decent amount of communication issues within the group in general. Kat doesn’t know what he’s doing wrong but also doesn’t want to talk about his feelings. And the squad doesn’t want to risk making Kat angry by bringing any of this up. They tease and poke fun at him to blow off steam and Kat takes this without a fight. Kat only seems to loosen up around them when he's intoxicated.

When Mortem shows up, Kat immediately hyperfixates on him. Feeding him by hand due to his injury, completely ignoring any red flags (such as the news story accusing Mortem of murder) and committing pretty early on to taking care of any of his needs. While they don’t have much in common at first, their shared demons speed up the bonding process. And Mortem starts to defend Kat when he sees the imbalance in their group.
